Welcome to St. Joseph County! As a resident of St. Joseph County, you should know about solid waste removal and recycling servces in the community. Solid Waste Management Districts are local governmental agencies specifically charged with an overall waste reduction statewide goal of 35% by 1996 and 50% by 2002. Meeting the first goal was not without many challenges and time delays. As we move ahead as a State and more locally a county, the obstacles facing the reduction and recycling departments are great. Economic factors, such as the cost to process and ultimately prevent these materials from the landfill, have fostered a mistrust and dislike for recycling programs. The value of throwing away less trash and fewer hazardous materials is far greater than a single focus approach in which revenues received back from these waste items is small or in most cases a negative return.
